That tāngata whai i te ora are:
Empowered to make mana enhancing life changes and decisions
Resilient and able to overcome adversity
Connected to Te Ao Māori – their whānau, whakapapa, whenua, marae, iwi and reo
Enriched with life skills and connections that can be used for their future
Rangatira who inspire their whānau and those around them to live a positive life
Able to dream, and willing and able to pursue those dreams
In partnership with Ara Poutama Aotearoa (The Department of Corrections) we provide a supported living service for tāne (tāngata whai i te ora) on their release from prison, or serving a community-based sentence, who want to make the changes necessary in their lives to prevent reoffending in the future.
Hāpai Ō is underpinned by Te Whare Tapa Whā. Te Whare Tapa Whā describes health and wellbeing as a wharenui/meeting house with four walls. These walls represent taha wairua/spiritual wellbeing, taha hinengaro/mental and emotional wellbeing, taha tinana/physical wellbeing and taha whānau/family and social wellbeing. This framework recognises that when these things are in balance, we can thrive. In this way, the service is holistic and encompasses the domains necessary to build a strong and resilient person able to take on the role of rangatira for their whānau, hapū and iwi.
The Kaimanaaki will receive oversight from cultural and clinical experts. Kaimanaaki will work in partnership with tāngata whai i te ora and their whānau starting with a comprehensive assessment. This will inform a personal wellbeing plan that comprises the services and experts they need to make the transformation into Rangatira. The wellbeing plan will facilitate access to kaupapa Māori health, social, education, employment and cultural services, and support progression towards outcomes tāngata whai i te ora have identified for each domain. Once they achieve their outcomes, tāngata whai i te ora will be safely handed over to their whānau, iwi and community.
